The film, produced by Kaashmor Movies and V. D. S. Alagarsamy, was released on 16 March 2003 to positive reviews, becoming successful at the box office, thanks to Ajith Kumar's performance. The film became a major success for Ajith's career, going on to win the Best Actor Award at the International Film Festival of India. The success of the film led to a spree of films written by the director, with all of them revolving around Ajith Kumar. Anjaneya was remade in Telugu as Seetharama Kalyanam with Jr. NTR.
Plot
"The incident took place in Mettur, an area that is part of the Madurai region in the state of Tamil Nadu. The young girl is murdered by a group of terrorists and a big deal is made out of it. Now that this incident has taken place, there are lot of people who are taking extra security measures. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Rajnikanth is alarmed. Rajnikanth, a political representative (minister) is about to go on a campaign of his own. He is being followed by a foreign reporter for TV and he is the only one, not aware about the risk that he is taking. He is accompanied by a set of security men and he's lost his phone. In his attempt to call the person whom he has been messaging, he finds that his mobile phone is in an isolated area, a deserted village. It seems that it's a trap. He is asked to step out of the car and he is then shot at by the terrorists. This is an assassination attempt. It's in the morning. He becomes unconscious.
One day later in the hospital, he finds that he's in a very serious condition. He is not able to be released, because he's in a coma and he's suffering from brain injury. At his bed, there are lot of people around him. They include his wife, his assistant (who's a doctor), his cameraman (who's also an assistant), his writer, the police chief, the local cops, a Congress leader, a journalist, two Ministers, a local MLA, two ministers and the minister's son (who's also an MLA), a retired officer, a lawyer, an RTI officer, a local school teacher, a sub-inspector and many more."
